  Activision Blizzard Prepares For The Future

Activision Blizzard, owner of the Call of Duty, Diablo, and Warcraft franchises, published its annual report for 2017 on Monday. The company’s earnings showed a 30 percent increase in sales from 2016 to 2017.

The report also noted an increase in female gamers year-over-year, representing 36% of the overall player base. It is up from 33% in 2016. The number of females playing digital games such as mobile and PC has seen a corresponding growth over the past two years with an estimated 36%. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said that he expects diversity to be one of the major drivers for growth moving forward as gaming becomes one of the most significant forms of entertainment across all platforms.

 Female Gamers Are on the Rise

While women continue to be one of the fastest-growing demographics in gaming, the gender gap between men and women gamers is still significant. The opening is further highlighted by looking at the total revenue generated by each demographic. Men represent 66% of all digital game revenue, and women represent 34%. While a 36% growth for female gamers is encouraging, there’s still much work left to do.

What Makes a Female Gamer?

A female gamer is any gamer playing games — that is, someone who plays video games. That player has an equal stake in the experience of the game. A female gamer plays because she enjoys it. Activision Blizzard reports that more than twice as many women play digital games than men is encouraging, but the gender gap still exists.

Female Gamers Are a Growing Market

While female gamers are growing, they are still one of the smallest markets in gaming. A small market means more money. Submarkets within a large gaming industry can be very profitable. Blizzard Entertainment released its mobile app in 2017 and has seen over 7 million downloads since its launch.
